Tourists Left Disappointed After Flocking To Buckingham Palace Christmas Market Only To Find Out The Advert Was Created By AI

Tourists have been left baffled after racing to Buckingham Palace to visit its ‘first ever’ Christmas market – only to find out it doesn’t exist.

Images circulating on social media had promised a winter wonderland-style attraction with snowy market stalls, a huge Christmas tree and a canopy of fairy lights in front of the royal family’s London residence.

But after eagerly flocking to the Palace this week, people were left disappointed to find no trace of a Christmas market, instead being met with scaffolding, security fences and puddles.

The advertising posters for the market had been made using artificial intelligence (AI), and were shared by several accounts with large followings on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.

A closer look at the pictures showed that the lights appeared to be floating in mid-air, while people’s faces were obscured and signage on the fronts of the huts was illegible.

In others, the market seemed to be taking place behind the gates of the palace itself, which would be a huge security breach.

On TikTok, disappointed visitors have shared their reactions to finding out the market was ‘fake’, even saying they felt they’d been ‘lied to’.

Filming herself outside the palace, Shivani Khosla said: ‘The truth behind the Buckingham Palace Christmas market is actually insane.

‘So guys, a few months ago, a guy basically posted a picture of this and they said there’s going to be loads of markets outside Buckingham Palace.

‘But he lied – the picture was AI-generated. Instead, this is what’s actually there. It’s just a shop.’

Kate Ovens added: ‘If you’ve seen the Buckingham Palace Christmas market on your For You page, just to let you know it’s not real! I am here, right now, on the day that it “opens”.

‘I’m going to show you exactly what it is because it’s not a Christmas market, it’s an AI-generated photo. And I kind of knew this before coming. That’s Buckingham Palace, it doesn’t look like the photos online.

‘I had read some things online that this might not even be a real thing.’

London-based what’s-on page, @loveandlondon, warned: ‘If a London account you follow has posted this, you should unfollow them because it’s a lie. When I first saw the photo, I thought it didn’t make any sense, because there’s a fence that surrounds this part of Buckingham Palace.

‘Also, where are these lights being hung from, the heavens? If you see this being shared, I think you should call out that this is completely false.’

The social media account @London.travelers had shared the image with their 2.5 million followers, though this has since been deleted.

Before it was taken down, the post read: ‘Get ready for a royal Christmas experience. For the first time ever, Buckingham Palace is hosting a Christmas market from December 1st to 24th, bringing festive cheer to one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

Another post promised it would be a ‘festive wonderland with charming stalls, handcrafted gifts, and seasonal delights – making it a must-visit destination this Christmas’.

There is, however, a festive pop-up shop at the Royal Mews gift shop around the corner, which is open all year round.

Among the Christmas items on display are baubles, toy corgis and gift sets.

Londoner James BJ, 36, told the Metro: ‘It was a complete waste of time. It was dark, cold and nothing was there.

‘I asked a couple of people also milling around if they were there for the market, and they said said yes but no one knew what was going on.

‘There were around 30 of us, just walking back and forth until we gave up and went home.’

Another disappointed visitor told the BBC: ‘We’ve come for a Christmas market that’s not here. I was going to enjoy a mulled wine, and now I’ve got chicken sandwiches.

Another said: ‘Everyone’s falling for this AI-generated advertising. We see the funny side, we’re going to go and find alternatives.’

The misinformation has become so widespread that the Royal Collection Trust has been forced to release a disclaimer on its website.

It reads: ‘Please note that the Royal Mews Christmas Shop is a pop-up shop selling Royal Collection Trust festive products within the existing Royal Mews shop space, and is not a Christmas market. There will not be a Christmas market at Buckingham Palace.’

Earlier this week, a festive new mural was spotted by the riverside walk in Kingston.

The massive display, which appeared above the Côte Brasserie restaurant and several others, appeared to show a large merry crowd happily celebrating the holidays.

But again, the display appeared to have been hastily generated using artificial intelligence (AI), resulting in horribly disfigured people and animals.

Baffled Londoners have flocked to social media to ridicule the bizarre scene.

On Redditone Kingston resident likened the mural to witnessing ‘scenes of Lovecraftian horror,’ adding ‘what in the AI is going on here and just HOW did this carnage get approved?’

Another viewer pointedly wrote: ‘So they didn’t even look at it once before printing it.’

In one section of the image, dogs with the heads of birds ran through a partially frozen body of water.

Another section showed a group of warped and disfigured humans paddling a raft using what appeared to be a dog’s leg on a stick.

While one particularly haunting image depicted something resembling a snowman with human eyes and teeth wading through the water.

The Daily Mail has contacted the Royal Collection Trust for further comment.
