Big knickers and Percy Pigs are just a couple of household items with which M&S has captured the hearts of the nation. It’s even transformed the way we eat dinner; forget three courses, a selection of this supermarket’s finest ‘picky bits’ willreallyimpress your guests.

But it’s next move is far less homely, but rather outdoorsy and very technical instead, as today marks its first foray into skiwear.

Yes, Sparks is hitting the (baby) slopes with the team behind its in-house activewear line, Goodmove, spending months on producing its brand new snow collection for women, men and kids.

High street salopettes and jackets are a red flag in my mind because typically the products are made with style over substance.

Whether you’re a fair weather skier or a powder hound, everyone knows kit really counts when you’re on the mountain – there’s nothing worse than having a soggy back on a chilly chair lift or a wet bum when you stop for lunch.

But Goodmove’s offering has the appropriate cold-weather engineering, it feels highly durable and is surprisingly sleek coming in a neutral palette of beige, black and white.

The Padded Reflective Ski Puffer Jacket is particularly impressive (£130). With its innovative water-repellent Stormwear technology and all the practical features that you expect when you spend in the mid-hundreds, rather than the low – see the soft brushed fabric lined pockets, a goggle wipe and a secure pass pocket.

It even has toggle cords on the hood and at the hem so you can adjust the fit as bad weather draws in.

The matching pants are just as sturdy with three layers of the in-house waterproof and wind-resistant fabric, sealed seams and a flattering high waist with adjustable braces (£70).

Internally these pants are brilliantly engineered with elasticated gaiters that protect your legs from the snow on your boots and they even have abrasion-resistant kick guards and adjustable cuffs.

The clip-together lined thermal ski gloves, with grip palms and touch-screen friendly finger pads, also look sound (£25).

Even if you’re only in it for the après-ski, the slogan knits are right on the money – my favourites are the cream and black ‘Le Ski’ roll neck (£46) or the monochrome crew neck featuring a printed listicle of French and Swiss resorts (£30).

M&S has thought of everything. What other low-cost high-fashion kit ranges lack, this collection has in heaps. It’s functional, aesthetically pleasing and true to the nature of this trusty high street haunt, above all, it’s fantastic value.

Handily the collection has arrived just in time for the Northern Hemisphere ski season and with 1.5 million Brits hitting the slopes every year, M&S certainly won’t be short of customers.

But to gain the trust of this cold weather set will be like making a run down the Streif in Austria. Though given the quality of this range, it’s one that Sparks is well equipped for.
