After Pip Edwards Ex Broke Through Barricades To Help Her, I Take Back Everything I Said About Australian Men. At Bondi, We Saw What True Heroism Looks Like JANA HOCKING

I have a confession to make: This year, I have given Australian men a bad rap.

I’ve been vocal about their lazy texts, laid-back attitudes and reluctance to approach women in public. I’ve complained about the way mates so often come before dates, and their preference for ‘going with the flow’ over making actual plans.

Not to mention their sloppy outfit choices.

I was, frankly, done.

I was so frustrated, in fact, that I packed my bags and flew to New York, then Paris for the European summer, determined to meet ‘real men’.

Men who knew how to wine and dine a lady. Men with manners. Men with bravado. Men who took pride in how they dressed.

I ranted about it endlessly. Check my archive! I even said it out loud on national TV: Australian men are the worst men to date in the world.

But I was wrong. Painfully wrong. And recent events have prompted amy fault.

After witnessing how Australian men stepped up during the horrific events at Bondi Beach on Sunday, I’ve been forced to eat my words.

For context: I’d just moved back to Bondi after a stint living elsewhere. It’s the fourth time I’ve returned to its beautiful shoreline.

For reasons I can’t quite explain, it always calls me back.

Bondi locals often get heat for refusing to leave the so-called ‘Bondi bubble’ – but anyone who’s lived there understands why.

It’s a melting pot of multicultural goodness. Local surfers mixing with Anglo-Irish backpackers. Chilean restaurant owners feeding sunburnt regulars. Brazilian Pilates instructors. Run clubs permanently hogging the Bondi to Bronte path. Jewish delis.

All bound together by an unmistakable sense of community. It’s hard not to fall in love with the place.

An hour before everything unfolded, a friend and I had walked over the very bridge where one of the gunmen later fired off rounds at a Hanukkah gathering.

We were heading home from the beach. Our apartment was 200 metres away.

Not long after we got home, my phone started lighting up.

The first call came from a close male friend. His voice was firm, urgent: ‘Jana, do not leave your apartment, there’s a shooter on the loose.’

It is a message you never expect to receive.

Then came a message from an ex, checking if I was safe. Then another. And another.

My housemate experienced the same thing. Within minutes, we were inundated with calls and texts. Not just from female friends, but from the men in our lives. Checking in. Offering help. Offering shelter. Making sure we were safe.

At one point, my friend turned to me and said that something about these texts made her feel safe, protected. It was welcome.

I knew exactly what she meant.

The men in our lives had switched into protector mode: calm, direct, present. The kind of energy women quietly crave but rarely see.

As the hours passed and we watched the events unfold metres from us, through videos sent by friends and through live news coverage, something shifted.

I had a stark realisation: Australian men are heroic.

Watching the brave shop owner tackle the gunman to the ground left me speechless. In a single moment of instinctive courage, he almost certainly saved lives.

Then came images of the men who rushed in after. They held him upright, shielded him, made sure he stayed conscious while receiving medical care after he was shot.

It was men at their absolute finest.

Watching Surf Life Saving volunteers sprint barefoot towards gunfire from the beaches of Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte stopped me in my tracks.

There was no hesitation – just men rushing towards danger, medical kits in hand. Many were first on the scene, offering help while shots rang out around them.

They didn’t leave. They stayed, working alongside police and paramedics, carrying blood-soaked victims to waiting ambulances.

Then came fashion designer Pip Edwards’ heart-racing account of hiding beneath a van as one of the shooters paced nearby.

After 15 terrifying minutes, her former flame Chris Woods broke through barricades to find her, shield her and get her out.

Side note: Pip, marry that man.

And all of this happened in my own backyard.

It was a sobering reminder that in moments of real crisis, Australian men possess a toughness and grit that runs far deeper than dating trends and dinner plans.

For far too long, I’ll admit, we women have been guilty of unfairly judging Australian men – holding them up against rose-tinted ideals of British charm, French sophistication and American swagger.

But when it mattered, none of that meant a thing.

What mattered was feeling safe, protected, cared for.

If there is any light to be found in such a dark day, it is this: When faced with unfathomable evil, Australian men stepped forward.

They protected strangers. They ran towards danger. And they checked in on the women around them.

Bravo, gentlemen. You did us proud.
