The president of the Miss Universe OrganizationRaul Rocha, is under fire for suggesting that Côte d’Ivoire’s Olivia Yacé didn’t win the competition due to visa restrictions.

Rocha was speaking with Mexican journalist Adela Micha when he made the surprising statement.

In a clip shared to social media, Rocha insinuated that Côte d’Ivoire’s Olivia Yacé wasn’t crowned because the West African country requires a visa to enter 175 countries.

‘There are many things that are evaluated,’ Rocha said in Spanish, as per the English translation of a clip shared online to Instagram by an account called missuupdates.

‘The job is one year of Miss Universe, 175 countries ask for a visa for Côte d’Ivoire,’ he continued.

‘Well, then she is going to be Miss Universe who spent a whole year in an apartment,’ he continued passionately.

‘Of course we want her to be in the universe,’ he said.

Rocha went on to add they want the woman ‘with the most travel and the most contacts with people in the world’ to be crowned.

Rocha faced immediate backlash over his remarks, which were interpreted as suggesting a contestant’s passport strength affects their likelihood of winning the competition.

Many fans in the comment section claimed that Yacé also holds American citizenship and is the daughter of a diplomat, so theoretically is free to travel to many countries. Yacé has not addressed these claims.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Cote d’Ivoire ranks 83rd on the database and can enter 58 countries without needing a visa.

The US passport ranks 11th on the Henley Passport Index and has visa-free access to 180 countries.

Yacé, who was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, rescinded her title in a statement issued on November 23, just two days after she was announced as the fourth runner-up.

‘I witnessed firsthand that I was capable of accomplishing great things despite adversity,’ Yacé wrote on social media.

‘But to continue on this path, I must remain true to my values: respect, dignity, excellence, and equal opportunity, the strongest pillars that guide me.’

The 2025 competition has been marred by controversy. Yacé’s resignation followed Miss Universe Estonia, Brigitta Schaback, who also rescinded her title,

During the competition, Miss Jamaica, Dr Gabrielle Henry, was hospitalized after a shock fall off the stage during the preliminary evening gown round.

Mexico’s Fatima Bosch was crowned Miss Universe on November 21 in Bangkok, Thailand.

A week after her win, two judges resigned – including one who openly accused organizers of rigging the entire competition.

Judge Omar Harfouch alleged a secretive ‘impromptu jury’ had locked in finalists long before the show.

‘An impromptu jury has been formed to select 30 finalists from among the 136 participating countries, without the presence of any of the real (eight) members of the jury, including me,’ Harfouch wrote on Tuesday, adding that he had discovered this via social media.

The unofficial jury comprises ‘individuals with a significant potential conflict of interest due to some personal relationships with some of the Miss Universe contestants’, he claimed.

The musician did not elaborate on how this ‘impromptu jury’ would function, or how it would override the official jury’s decision.

Miss Universe Organizers have strongly denied Harfouch’s accusations, insisting ‘no external group has been authorized to evaluate delegates or select finalists.’

In 2023, Miss Universe CEO Anne Jakrajutatip was accused of rigging the beauty pageant so R’Bonney Gabriel from the United States could win.

However, organizers called the allegations ‘false’ and ‘absurd,’ adding that the claims ‘distract’ from Gabriel becoming the first Filipino American to be crowned as Miss Universe.

This year’s winner, Bosch, 25, made headlines earlier this month after she stormed out of a key event after pageant organizer Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly berated her and called her ‘dumb’ in front of stunned competitors.

After she pushed back, he called in security and threatened to punish anyone siding with her – prompting Bosch to walk out as several contestants bravely followed.

‘What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb,’ Bosch told reporters at the time.

‘The world needs to see this because we are empowered women and this is a platform for our voice.’

While social media across Mexico were elated by her win, others were quick to suspect ulterior motives, with rumors that the crown may have been awarded to make up for the humiliation of Bosch earlier circulating online.
