Like 6 million other Brits, I enjoy a cigarette.

But my smoking habit totally spun out of control this year. Since age 15, I’ve usually been found with a cigarette dangling between my lips, but it’s only recently that I have had two asthma attacks and I’m coughing daily.

My dentist pulled three molars out this year, and tells me I’ll ‘be toothless by 50’ if I don’t stop smoking soon. I’m 46 in 2026.

So this season, aided by a disposable vape and a pretty necklace aid, I decided to give giving up a go.

I’d tried vapes before and not taken to them, with a painful wheeze after every puff. But something a volunteer on a night out in Scotland said to me gave me hope. She was puffing away on her vape and I couldn’t help but pipe up: ‘I wish I could vape like you – I’m so jealous!’

Smoking cigarettes had left me besieged with desperation, with wrinkled lips and sagging jawline, not to mention my dull complexion I so frequently smeared with Vitamin-C products in a vain bid to get some colour.

The kind lady smiled at grey-faced me, before saying: ‘You just haven’t found the right vape yet!’

So on returning from my Scottish sojourn, I went straight to the local vape shop to try again.

And I loved it from the get-go!

I immediately stopped smoking for 3 days and had just a dozen ciggies over the next 2 months.

Within two days of vaping, I got my sense of smell back and couldn’t believe how much my home, my hair and my wardrobe stunk of tobacco.

It was a wonderful 3 days where I enjoyed scented candles, wearing perfume and tasting food.

But then, disaster struck!

A short, winter-sun break in Marrakesh where Camel lights cost only £3 was too great-a-lure. I was back on forty-a-day as soon as I could open a pack.

On returning home, I thought I’d try quitting again, this time with another aid I’d discovered that suited my style-sensibilities.

Chalumu are a Bristol based design duo who make necklaces that help quit smoking or vaping and also reduce anxiety.

There are quite a few scientific papers, including one in The Lancet, which found that people like me, with mental illness, are likely to smoke cigarettes – and frequently than other smokers too.

So, I ordered one. In gold. With hearts.

And with my two golden bullion bars of quit, I tried it to stop my chain-smoking habit once , using the gold necklace with pretty hearts on and Sonder vape.

That was over Christmas and I’ve been pleasantly surprised – halving my ciggies and cutting down on my vape after lunchtimes.

Opening the tissue for the necklace was like Santa had come early – it’s a nice tooter to wear on a chain that’s reminiscent of a whistle from the rave era.

I had already managed to cut down dramatically around October-November, to over a quarter of my usual 40-a-day, with a vape and was keen to try and cut back on the vaping even , because it was never far from my lips.

Since combining the vape and necklace, I’m now trying to establish a routine of necklace/vape that supports cutting back on my ciggies. The vape does the morning ciggies and heavy lifting there, and I start tooting on the necklace during the afternoon and evenings, when the cravings aren’t as strong.

So, 10 days over the festive season and I’m down to 20 ciggies a day, not a roaring success, admittedly. But my teeth are less wobbly and my asthma has improved greatly.

Over the last 3 months, there have been ups and downs but on the whole I’ve than halved how many ciggies I smoke.

My smoking is a work in progress and a resolution for next year.

My skin has had its colour restored from grey-to-glow. My eyes are brighter. I swear I keep double checking my mirrors too – could I really look ten years younger?
