Taiwan bans the Chinese Red Note app

The Taiwanese Ministry of the Interior revealed that the application has been linked to 1,706 cases of fraud since last year, with a total value of about 248 million Taiwanese dollars (equivalent to 9.7 million US dollars).

Bloomberg quoted the ministry as saying that the victims have no way to recover their money or obtain compensation, because the company operating the application is located outside Taiwan.

Earlier this year, Taiwan’s National Security Bureau warned citizens against using Chinese applications on mobile phones, citing possible security vulnerabilities in them.

This warning came after examining 5 popular Chinese applications, including “Tik Tok,” “Red Note,” “Weibo,” “WeChat,” and “Baidu Cloud.” The examinations revealed serious violations of the privacy and integrity of users’ communications according to multiple indicators.
