The SS26 runways have wrapped up and we’ve finally had enough time to fully process all of the incredible pieces showcased in our favourite designers’ shows.
This season was easily one of the most exciting we’ve seen for many years, with a whole host of buzzy big-name designer debuts, including Matthieu Blazy at ChanelLouise Trotter at Bottega Venetta and Jonathan Anderson at Dior.
While the SS26 collections won’t drop until next year, fashion famously moves quickly and so some of the key trends from the shows are already popping up on the high street.
To help you get ahead of the curve, we’ve rounded up some of the biggest trends from the SS26 shows that we think are well worth investing in now. Not got a designer budget? Don’t panic – we have you covered with our round-up of high street alternatives.
Shirts with a statement skirt
As spotted at Chanel (above) the shirt is having a big moment right now. But, we’re not talking tucked into your work trousers; fashion insiders are wearing theirs with statement skirts – tapping into the high/low trend that’s been hanging around for a few seasons.
The French fashion house wasn’t the only brand to send shirts down the runway alongside unexpected bottoms. Bottega Veneta and Calcaterra paired the wardrobe staple with voluminous fringed designs, while Christopher Esber opted for trousers embellished top-to-bottom in iridescent shells, and Dolce & Gabbana decided upon sultry slips and lacy shorts.
While we might not all be walking runways everyday, you can easily adapt the trend to make it appropriate for upcoming party season. Our tip? Always opt for a slightly boxy fit shirt to keep it feeling modern.
Feathers
One for the fashion maximalist – feathers took centre stage at a number of high profile shows this season. Issey Miyake (above) did it best, pairing the ultra-feminine detail with modern shapes and bold colours.
In a similar vein, Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten and Giuseppe Di Morabito sent feathered skirts down the runway in bold colourblock hues, while Brandon Maxwell opted for a slightly more subtle route, adorning the shoulders of a number of jackets to create fashion’s answer to a military epaulette.
The trend lends itself to eveningwear dressing. I would recommend keeping feathers reserved for special occasions, as they can be hard to pull off for every day. My advice for trying the trend on a budget would be by adding in feathers via accessories or on other small elements, such as cuffs or hems.
Checks
Check has been everywhere of late. Perhaps, it has something to do with fashion’s obsession with all things Scottish. Maria Grazia Chiuri spearheaded the resurgence with the Dior Cruise 2025 collectionwhich took place in the gardens of Drummond Castle and featured kilts, tartans, argyle print and even Tam O’Shanters.
While most trends fall into oblivion after a season, it appears tartan and check is set to stick around a little while longer. Brands like Brandon Maxwell (above) and Carolina Herrera channeled the 90s, adorning structured suiting in playful yellow checks; Chanel and Coach kept it classic, with brown and grey neutral prints for a more office-appropriate offering.
‘I think checks are a really simple and easy way to add interest and drama to your outfit,’ says stylist Martine Alexander. Although she advises being cautious about how you style the geometric print.
‘For curvy ladies, I’d look for check trousers with no stretch and a wide leg. The statement print involves a horizontal line so, if the fabric is stretchy or the cut is a flare, then it could make your hips look wider than they actually are.’
Burgundy
While butter yellow and postbox red have seen popularity in recent years, the SS26 shows were all about burgundy. From Proenza Schouler (above) to Carolina Herrera, almost every collection showcased the hue in some form.
Perhaps it’s the richness of the shade, which carries connotations of quiet luxury, or the fact that it’s universally flattering and easy to wear that has everyone clammering to fill their wardrobes with burgundy.
Tash Bradleycolour expert and Director of Interior Design at Lick explains how the trend is so prevalent that it is trickling down into all lifestyle categories. ‘It has all the grounding warmth of brown, but with this gorgeous confidence and richness. It’s sophisticated, soulful and exactly the kind of colour people are craving right now.’
The best thing about the shade is that it can be treated as a neutral and matched with just about anything. In fact, some of our favourite street style moments this season involved people wearing the shade with bold, clashing colours.
‘What I love about burgundy tones is the unexpected pairings you can create. People often think of burgundy as something that only works with neutrals, but it can look so chic and modern when you start to play with colour,’ says Bradley.
‘Take green, blue and red together; such a beautiful trio. The freshness of the blue, the grounded green and the warmth of the burgundy balance each other so effortlessly. It’s that perfect mix of classic and contemporary – cool, chic, but still timeless.’
Capes
It appears Claudia Winkleman is very much ahead of the curve, sartorially-speaking, thanks to her caped looks on The Traitors. The outerwear style was all over the SS26 catwalks, with our favourite, most dramatic takes spotted at Jonathan Anderson’s womenswear debut for Dior (above).
Elsewhere, Richard Quinn embraced its signature ultra-romantic floral prints, matching the floor-length capes with its gorgeous silk eveningwear.
‘Style your cape with a very simple tailored, fluid trouser to keep an ethereal look to your whole outfit. To keep your look chic, keep everything in the same colour family, or better yet, the exact same colour,’ explains stylist Martine Alexander.
Of course, capes don’t only have to be saved for best. The trend also lends itself to a more utilitarian look, in warm wool, with practical storm flaps. Carolina Herrera and Alaïa did it best.
